{review} Buttons Cloth Diaper Natural Inserts

Six months ago I got the opportunity to review Buttons Diapers' cloth diaper covers and inserts. They are still one of my favorite covers (I personally have purchased 4 more covers) and I have been using the microfiber inserts more now that my baby is bigger. The only thing that I didn't like about the inserts is that they were made from microfiber, which is not my favorite fabric. I am super excited that Buttons Diapers now makes a NATURAL HEMP/COTTON insert topped with a super luxurious fleece.

Buttons Diapers wanted me to try out their new inserts so they sent me a new super cute cover and a day time hemp/cotton insert.

The covers are the same as they were when I reviewed them last May (see previous review here). - the cover is made of a double layer of PUL that is soft, stretchy and waterproof and has double leg gussets to contain messes.

The hemp/cotton daytime insert has four layers of natural fabric made up of 55% hemp and 45% cotton, and topped with one layer of stay dry fleece. The inserts come in two sizes (the small fit babies 9-20 pounds and the large fits babies 20-35 pounds) and snaps into the cover.

My Review and Star Ratings

Leak Prevention (The Cover)
This is one of our favorite covers (I have two favorites - Buttons and Best Bottoms) that I have been using with Baby #2. The cover is thick and contains even runny newborn messes. I actually have never had a leak using this cover except for operator error one night when I left a giant leg gap (oops). I use the cover over fitted diapers, prefolds, Buttons inserts - pretty much anything that is absorbent, I stuff into this cover and use.

Absorbency (The New Hemp/Cotton Inserts)
The insert is absorbent, especially considering that it is only 4 layers of absorbent material. We use it for day time use and I usually use it with a booster underneath. However, I LOVE that it is made from natural fibers and does not hold odors like the microfiber inserts do.

Aesthetic Design
Buttons diaper covers now come in prints and colors! I love the new prints. Check out the Buttons Diapers website to see all their designs.

Price (the New Hemp/Cotton Inserts)
The covers are super affordable ($11 for solid colors and $12.50 for prints - as of 11/13/14). However, I was shocked to see that the natural fiber inserts are twice as much as the microfiber inserts (microfiber 3 pack costs $10.50. Hemp/Cotton 3 pack costs $23.25). I know that cotton/hemp fabric is more expensive (I've made a lot of diapers and I have researched and purchased lots of materials) but I didn't think that they would cost more than twice as much.

Overall (The Cover)
I love the covers still after using them for 6 months. I use them on a daily basis and I have personally purchased more. I love the double gussets and as long as I put them on correctly, I have never had a issue with leaks, even when the insert is completely saturated.

Overall (The New Hemp/Cotton Inserts)
The insert is absorbent (I do use a homemade doubler with it though), it washes really nice, and it feels dry when wet. I use the inserts during the day because they are not bulky under clothing. However for about the same cost, I can purchase sized fitted diapers which are a lot more absorbent and use the fitted diapers with the covers. I will sacrifice a little bit of trimness for more absorbency.
