{Herbal Learning Guide} Lesson 1F: Recipes for the Nervous System

There are many recipes out there that are meant to support a healthy nervous system and help solve common problems/issues related to the Nervous System (see Lesson 1E: Common Problems and Issues of the Nervous System). Remember that it is important to research and understand each herb included in a recipe before you recommend it to anybody or use it yourself. You are in charge of your own health!
The following are a few recipes that I have found beneficial for the Nervous System and I have included in my reference binder.

Scullcap Tea for Headaches and Nervous Stress
2 parts Scullcap
2 parts Lemon Balm
½ part Feverfew
4 parts Chamomile
To Prepare: Prepare as an infusion. Drink at least ¼ cup every half an hour until the headache symptoms are gone. Source: Rosemary Gladstar. The Science and Art of Herbalism. Chapter 1, page 18.

Goodnight Tea
4 parts St. John’s Wort
3 parts Lemon Balm Leaves
2 parts Valerian Root
2 parts Cowslip Flowers
2 parts Hawthorn Leaves and Flowers
2 parts Passion Flower (Maypops)
2 parts Oats (Straw)
2 parts Hops
1 part Lavender Blossoms
Infuse herbs in water and drink one cup each hour for 3 hours before bed. Source: Barbara and Peter Theiss. The Family Herbal, page 115.

Brain Tonic Tincture
2 parts Gota Kola
1 part Gingko Leaf
1 part Peppermint
½ part Sage
½ part Rosemary
Place herbs in a wide mouth jar and cover with 80% proof brandy or vodka. Cover the jar with a tight fitting lid and place in a warm, shaded area for 6-8 weeks. Shake the jar every few days to prevent the herbs from settling on the bottom. Strain and rebottle for use. Recommended daily dose: ½ teaspoon diluted in ¼ cup water, juice, or tea, two times daily for 2-3 months. Source: Rosemary Gladstar. The Science and Art of Herbalist. Chapter 1, page 23.

Nerve Tonic Formula
1 part Chamomile
3 parts Lemon Balm Leaves
1 part Oats
½ part Chrysanthemum Flowers
¼ part Lavender Flowers
½ part Rose Petals
Optional: Stevia to taste

Migraine Tea
6 parts Rosemary Leaves
4 parts Peppermint Leaves
4 parts Lemon Balm Leaves
4 parts Sweet Violet Leaves
3 parts Feverfew
½ part Sweet Violet Flowers
Infuse the herbs in water. This tea has a very fine flavor and can be enjoyed daily for many months. It is also recommended as a morning wake-up drink or breakfast tea, since the essential oil of the rosemary causes vasodilatation, promotes peripheral blood flow, and generally stimulates and refreshes. The plant sweet violet hides from the sun and loves the shade, and oftentimes helps migraine patients who cannot tolerate bright sunlight and seek darkness and shade. Homework for this Lesson:
1. As you continue to research the Nervous System, write down any recipes that you find interesting. Research the herbs included in these recipes. Make sure you write down the recipe source so you can find it in the future.
2. Create 2-4 of the recipes you find and try them for yourself. Record your thoughts, feelings, and experiences.
3. Start a section in your Herbal Reference Binder titled “Favorite Recipes”. Include recipes that you find effective. As you continue to learn about herbs and experience them personally, you will be able to change recipes to make them your own.
